Can an Artist Ever Retire?

It has been almost seven years since I walked out of the classroom for the last time, after 38 years of teaching art. So why am I still teaching? Every week, about a dozen random students whose ages range from 7 to 92 walk into my studio to learn to draw, paint, print, make books, create sculptures. And I LOVE it!! It is even better now that I can switch schedules when I need to. Maybe if I had been a math or English teacher, I would not be so eager to continue sharing what I’ve learned. But I continue to make art with a passion, learning new things that just have to be shared. So share I do, in private lessons, in classes at the local Art League, and with unsuspecting strangers who seem interested. Will I ever quit? I suppose when I quit learning, I will have nothing more to share, but please, may that day never arrive.
